Awareness raising meetings in Romit Gorge area

From 7 to 12 August 2017 awareness raising meetings were held in the area of Romit Gorge. These meetings took place in areas which face shortages in electricity supply. For instance, local population uses a small generator to meet its electricity needs for 4-5 hours during a day. Therefore, the local population uses it only during the night. Another problem is that the generator’s mechanical parts often break and people are left without electricity until they are repaired.

The reason for selecting this area as a target one for meetings is that firewood is used as the main source of lighting and heating here. Local people are often busy with collection of wood on sunny days. Children, teens, women and girls are the main forces who fulfill this work.

In the course of the meetings the information on contemporary means of lighting and heating, “Smart green energy solutions” was distributed and their effective ways of usage were discussed. Participants expressed high interest to solar panels and asked many questions regarding exploitation of those devices.

Another question on the agenda was to reduce the participation of women and girls in collection of wood.

To climb high to the mountains and go down with collected wood is both difficult and dangerous for women and girls. It appeared that majority of male population of the village is in labor migration and therefore women of the village are forced to do such work themselves.

Upon completion of the meetings it was decided to make solar panels and other “Smart green energy solutions” accessible for local population. It is worth mentioning that the representatives of local government provided huge assistance in organization and conducting of these meetings. Local population as well took very active part in them.
